Advice from an Editor

Throughout the 2 years that I have been an editor for Journalism, I have learned quite a few things.

1. We make errors. This is quite funny because in reality we make errors. Errors that shouldn’t really be there but we still make them after so many times of learning of our mistakes. But one thing journalism should remember is that no one is perfect, all you can do is strive better for next time. And that can help you make less errors.

2. Organization is key to a good paper. I had so many problems with this. In the beginning I had trouble making sure everything was organized. Once I started learning life just got easier for me. Since I was so busy, I had to stretch myself thin and that was impossible at times. But with organization I made sure the articles were on time, the pictures, the folders and overall the layout.

Taking this class really changed the way I communicate with people and the way I work. I don’t regret taking this course and learning from Dean who turned out to be a good teacher after all. I’ll be taking everything I learned here and applying it later on in life and in college. I just hope I’m able to survive college the way I have survived journalism and the demands of it.

3. Talk it out. Whatever problems your staff has with the layout, pictures or just the way things are being processed..make sure to talk it out. Communication is key to success and hello we are a newspaper. So the thing to do is to communicate with your editors and with your advisor.

I will definitely miss this class. Not the work as much but just the fact that I was able to take part of something bigger than myself. And although not a lot of people read the paper and threw them away in the trash, I still tried my best.
