It came to my attention in June that one of my students from my 10th grade class two years ago (which translates to the graduating class of 2010), was shot and killed.
I do not have much to say, but I wanted to at least give a moment to mention and honor my memory of Leo Lopez. Although not a good student, and I had him removed from my class because of behavior, I will never say that Leo was a bad kid. For the most part, my students never are.
I am sorry for his violent death, which for all intents and purposes, was completely impersonal, which is perhaps the worse kind.
Many condolences to his family, to the family members who I knew of, his mother and his older brother.
People always have something to say about who they are and why they dress how they dress. In reality most people are superficial, afraid if they change their style they would be considered as “transformers” but the truth of the matter is It’s you ; wear what you want, , be yourself
Tip of the hat
To those who care but not enough to be influenced by others. To those whose dress be they want to express, want to look nice, decent, not because of others but for their own interest. Even if you’re into fashion

The New Senior-For-Sure-Fail list is a sheet that, when submitted on Tuesday, June 1, will keep any senior from graduating on stage. LAUSD will mail the students’ parents notifying them of the fact that they will not graduate.
This Sure-Fail List, as it is called, does not reflect the final grades because those grades are due on June 16. Teachers were notified today on May 25 to warn their students of this, and to begin gathering possible failing students.
Students all over the school will be conferencing with their to teachers concerning their grades and their possibility of not graduating. Some students are outraged at the fact that their only chance to make amends to their grades has been robbed from them.
Students, please speak with your teachers and make sure you have a say on your future. LAUSD will be spending money so that when it is sent home your parents will have to sign a paper the mailman will have and receive the letter saying if your graduating on stage or not.
Hopefully you all do well, and have fun at Roosevelt‘s Senior prom.
I grew up with one of my favorite cousins. She was older then me by 3 years. She and I would do everything together. She was like the oldest sister I would have asked for, and also my best friend.
Every time our family would get together i remember i would have this jolly face on me, because i would not see her as often as i would want too. She lived in south central and i lived here in Boyle heights. As time went by she started maturing and left her childhood. We would talk, but not as much like before.
Once she turned 18 she decided that college wasn’t really her thing. She knew that if she went to college that she would not have made it, so she decided to make a HUGE decision and join the Army. She believed that joining the Army would be easier for her to get her career straight and be more independent for herself. But as others believed she was risking her life in joining, a lot of our family tried to convince her against it, but she wouldn’t listen. She had her mind set already.
As for me i was really sad to hear that she was joining the army=, but the other part of me was really happy that she was making a right choice for herself. I look up to her and I really want to join the Army, but I’m scared to go to war if i am chosen to go. My cousin and i don’t really see each other anymore. We hardly talk now that she’s in Colorado station.
Our family still gathers together but it’[s sad to see she’s not there to join us as before. Maybe she won’t be joining us for a while since she might be sent to Iraq in August. As time goes by i think about it and i wonder to myself, if she could change anything would she?
As teenagers grow into full grown adults, there seems so be an issue that is increasing at an alarming rate and that happens to be the excess consumption of alcohol. Many teenagers tend to do it because they want to have a “good time”,” forget about problems”, to “party- hardy” or basically just to “go with the flow”
Teenagers don’t really think of the long term effects that it can have on them. All some think about is just having a very good time. I insist that teenagers/high school students have to realize that they can have a good time at a party without drinking. Some questions that can come to mind before drinking and having second thoughts about it can be:
“Do I really need to be buzzed/drunk to have a good time? Does this mean that I’m not fun being sober?
Can this be an issue I may have?
All I’m saying is that, if you find yourself drinking, or drinking too much you have to realize what effects that may have upon you. Think of the future, don’t mess up your present & you’re future. Bad things can happen when drunk that you may regret.
And if you don’t know if alcohol is getting out of hand you can ask yourself these other questions!
Do you sometimes drink more than you mean to? Have you tried to cut back on your drinking and failed? Do you black-out (have trouble remembering things that happened) while drinking? Have your problems at school, work or with your relationships gotten worse since you started drinking? Do you keep drinking even though you know it’s causing problems? Do you drink when you feel stressed? Do you drink alone? Can you drink much more now than you used to be able to? Do you ever feel uncomfortable when you haven’t had a drink? Do you drink even when it’s important to stay sober?
After being in Roosevelt for 4 years, I realized that now senior year is close to coming to its end and I still can’t believe it.
I can honestly say that i’m scared and at the same time excited about going out to college. I remember walking into Roosevelt as a dumb little freshman who wanted to go back home right as soon as I walked through the door.
I thought high school was going to be like all the older kids punking on the little ones but little did I know that this wasn’t the occasion. Everybody seemed to be in their own world, with their own friends and everybody minding their own business.
My Sophomore and Junior years went exactly how I thought they would go. I made great friends who I know I can always count on, but yet again I also made some friends who ended up just being backstabbers, trash talkers and just plain rude people. Those people are no longer part of my life! After 9 months of being in school, it just hit me that I only have like 2 months left of school then im off to college into a new world all by myself .
Fresno State will be the college I will be attending, and although it’s going to be a way different school, I am really looking forward to going.

Fascist Nazi forces from the misnamed “National Socialist Movement” are coming to LA. These racists have been organizing rallies in Southern California to attack and harass immigrants. But each time, they have been driven away by huge counter-???protests.???
Nazi racism targets not only Latino immigrants, but also the Black community, Asians, Arabs, Native peoples, Jews, LGBT people, leftists and anyone who opposes their hate. Now, the Nazis are attempting to rally in downtown LA at City Hall. We must be there with thousands to say NO to racism!
The ANSWER Coalition is calling on all anti-racist people to stand united against the Nazis and drive them out of Los Angeles. Help us build this action. Together, we can stop racist hate! Down with Nazis/KKK!

We are in the thick of march madness, and I’m not talking NCAA Basketball. On the heels of the mass demonstration in Washington, DC last Sunday, and marches throughout California this week, Los Angelinos will be out in full force tomorrow.
Congress continues to place the immigration reform bill on the back burner. The last immigration reform bill was passed in 1986 under President Ronald Reagan’s administration.
It’s not right that we don’t focus on the immigration reform bill on the basis that it’s not “practical”. If I may recall, attempting to pass a health care bill wasn’t practical either, however, Congress has made it evident that they have priorities.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa who met with Congress, asked for money to invest in public transportation. As opposed to demand an immigration reform bill for the people of his community, he doesn’t. It’s time that America stops playing politics and starts focusing on what’s right, as opposed to what’s popular.
With the above stated, we, as the youth must show our support. And ultimately, pressure Congress to pass a fair immigration reform bill in 2010. This Saturday, people will be marching to show support. It’s important that people attend! Tell your friends and families to go. SHOW SUPPORT!
“March and Rally, Saturday, March 27, 2010 10 a.m. Olympic Blvd. and Broadway Blvd.”
Things change throughout time. Environments change extremely, depending on the place you are located.
My parents and other oldies have told me there times at Roosevelt High school and how there were different races and not many Hispanics. Also how they would always would love to go to school, and school wasn’t such a big deal as it is today!
They didn’t know what drugs were at that time. Everyone was friendly and kind. Of course there were some people who got out of hand!
Unlike today it seems like if you look at someone they take it the wrong way, and drama comes along! What happened to the peaceful past? Why did Roosevelt students change so much? Have you ever thought about that?
At around 4:04 a.m. on Tuesday, March 16 a 4.4 magnitude earthquake woke up many California residents. No one saw the earthquake coming, and if it wasn’t for the trembling and shaking walls, many people wouldn’t have felt a thing (and some didn’t).
The earthquake was centered approximately 10 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles, near the Whittier Narrows fault.
According to the Associated Press, “the quake hit not far from the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake, a magnitude 5.9 quake that killed eight people and caused more than $350 million in damage.”
While there were no injuries and no damage, experts say that there is a 5% chance that small earthquakes can trigger a bigger earthquake in the preceeding days.
Experts also say that earthquakes like today’s should remind people that California is long over due for a big earthquake from the San Andreas fault, and that they must keep food, water, and supplies on stock.
Read up, and get some tips on how to prepare for an earthquake!
