a thousand splendid suns
May 27th, 2010 by vivi

either one

A thousand Splendid suns is about the people that live and survive their lives in third world countries during war time. They see many gruesome things that scars them and follows them until adulthood. In this book you realize about all the horrible suffering women go through in their daily lives. Over there it is so normal for women to be treated in such inhuman manners by their husbands and other men.

I really recommend this book because it opens your eyes to so may things that i never thought possible. It makes you really appreciate life as we know it and everything in this country that protects women’s rights.

Bermuda Triangle
May 23rd, 2010 by jasmine10

The Bermuda Triangle is also known as the Devil’s Triangle, located in the Atlantic Ocean is a triangle shaped region that many people have said that a number of airplanes, ships, and boats have disappeared mysteriously and nobody has found out about them ever again.

The Mary Celeste was one out of many ships that was considered as one of the victims of the Bermuda Triangle. They said that the ship was found abandoned. No one ever found out the real reason about why the ship was found abandoned it makes no sense no anyone because they never had any evidence. They say that the ship was found with all of it’s belongings, nothing was found stolen, and the whether had been fine all those days. Then they found out that the ship had passed through Bermuda Triangle.

Many things that happen to go missing when they cross through the Bermuda Triangle, people don’t really believe that it was it or others just have other excuses and theories of why or what happened that day. Many other things have happened through the Bermuda Triangle. Some people are scared some others just don’t believe in it and think that what’s going to go wrong? So they just do it, but i haven’t known about anybody as brave as that. Maybe one day I will or WE will.

Metro Gold Line
Feb 2nd, 2010 by jessy56

Due to budget cuts, Mr. Gertner’s class was force to use the new Metro Gold line for their field trip to see “Palestine, New Mexico.”

It seems like a wacky idea at first, but at the end it became a great learning opportunity for the students of his class to learn about the transportation option in their neighborhood.

The Metro Gold line has been one of the most exiting project in the east side of town in recent years. Ever since it opened in November, it has given the opportunity for commuters to travel around Los Angeles in a different and faster way.

When entering the new Metro Gold line station, in Soto and 1st,  I noticed how nice and new everything looked. It look like it was still the grand opening.
You would think that a place like this would be fill with life but as it turns our it empty and lifeless, except for the officer who were their for security purpose.

Waiting on the Gold line didn’t take much time, in less than five minutes the train was here and ready to take us of to our destination.

Once aboard the train cart you can see and feel how nice and comfortable everything was. Riding the Metro to Union Station was a pleasant ride, looking out the window of the train you could see all the new improvements the Metro Gold line has brought to this once forgotten community.

Overall the Metro Gold line has brought new ways of commuting to other parts of Los Angels, and gives the opportunity for students like Mr. Gertner’s class to explore new stuff around their city.
Is the Metro really that safe?
Dec 15th, 2009 by Patricia

On November 25, 2009 the time had come for the community of East Los Angeles for a new and vital transportation link to bring a new epoch of access. The Metro Gold line arrived at East LA, completing eight new stations serving diverse LA neighborhoods. The extension of the Metro Gold Line was an eagerly awaiting period for many people.

Discouragement is in the air now to whether the East Side Metro is really safe after all for people and children. So was it worth it all in the end to spend $898 million on the new East Side Metro Gold Line? Is the East Side Metro Gold Line really as safe as MTA Chief Executive Art Leahy said “he believes the line will be safe when it opens”?

In an interview with the LA Times Gloria Molina, member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the current chairwoman of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority said “I don’t know that it’s safe. They’re telling me that it’s safe. . . . Everything has been an excuse. Everything…”

Gloria Molina has represented the Eastside for almost two decades, playing a major role in bringing rail service to the area, where she said “East L.A. and Boyle Heights are a largely working-class immigrant population that relies heavily on mass transit.”

But Molina is disappointed at the decision of how the structure came to a conclusion, that only a portion of the line is underground and majority of the route is above ground.“Gloria Molina calls the Eastside Gold Line extension ‘substandard’ and potentially dangerous and says she worries that children leaving school are in danger of being hit by oncoming trains.”

She felt that East LA and Boyle Heights deserved a subway line and ended up getting a less-expensive light-rail route. Supervisor Molina had gone on an interview with Times and stated that she doesn’t think there is enough fencing to prevent people from crossing the tracks, predominantly children at nearby schools.Obviously not being able to change the way the East Side Metro Gold Line has been built there is thought and necessity for programs and shops that outreaches the community and residents to familiarize themselves with safety tips on the new line.

When asked about what should be changed or added to the East Side rail Mariela Marquez 12 stated “There should obviously be safe guards where the train runs through the street, not only for car purposes but pedestrians passing as well.”

Safe Guards would be very accommodating to the drivers and pedestrians especially in the early morning or late at night when you can’t see the road let alone a train coming straight at you.

There has already been one accident report on LA NOW where two people suffered minor injuries when their car collided with a Gold Line Metro train in East Los Angeles. The car turned in front of the eastbound train at a crossing near 3rd Street and Rowan Avenue about 8:20 p.m. This accident proves that there needs to be Safe Guards on the streets to prevent misfortunes like these to happen again.

Maxine Estrada 12 is convinced that people in East LA are treated without consideration and concern, “Does it really take a person’s life for MTA to install safety security? If we had lived in a white neighborhood they would have thought of all the possibilities to prevent a child from being run over or a car colliding with the train.”

MTA could only offer safety tips for the residents,

1. Exercise caution at all time. Watch for “TRAIN” signal.

2. Always wait for a “walk” signal” before entering the crosswalk.

3. Always use the crosswalk. Never jaywalk across the tracks.

4. Never make a left turn on a red arrow. This will be enforced by cameras at each intersection.

5. Right turns are allowed while a Gold Line train is passing through but may be restricted at certain intersections.

Auto Show Report

The L. A. Auto Show was created on January 23, 1907 at a skating ring at Morkey’s on Grand Avenue. Now it is one of the biggest shows in the country, with many different cars from the past and the present, and it’s on every year in December.

This year’s show started on December 4 and it ended on the 13. It was held at the Convention Center in downtown L.A. To buy a ticket you could either go online or buy one at the front gate for $12 dollars.

The show featured information about certain cars like the new hybrids, which are also known as “Green Cars”.

In the show there were many concept cars. These are vehicles that are going to come out in the future with different kinds of technology that the world has never seen.

One of the concept versions that many people were impressed by was the new Ford Fusion Hybrid with an impressive MPG (miles per gallon) of 41. The new Ford Fusion is affordable to anyone and it has many different features that are useful, like the bluetooth feature for your cell phone.

In the show you are not only allowed to look at the vehicles, but you are also allowed to go inside the vehicles to experience how they feel but you can’t drive them. The only cars that you are not allowed to get in are the exotic vehicles like the Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Bentleys, and Bugattis. “But Sadly, these four vehicles weren’t available this year,” said an individual from the show.

This year, the show had the new Camaro to see and feel, because last year they only had two Camaros to see and take pictures only. Not only was the new camaro there, but they also had Bumble Bee, the first concept Camaro used in Transformers One.

Not only was there Bumble Bee in the show, but there was also Jay Leno’s custom Camero with a custom body kit and different engine modifications.

In the back side of the convention center, they had a building called the “Kids’ Zone” where kids could have fun with several activities, including go cart races.

The L.A Auto Show is an event for all ages, where people can enjoy themselves and have good time just walking around seeing many different new vehicles that they might possibly buy in the future. Not only does the show have many different cars to look at, but they also have employees from all types of dealers who can give you more information about the vehicle.

Boyle Heights Metro Gold Line
Nov 17th, 2009 by Patricia

Celebration to the opening of the East Side Metro Gold Line on First Street and Soto on  Sunday, November 15, 2009. There was excitment amongst the neighborhood friends in Boyle Heights and also for those who would like to get familiar to the East Side.

There was much to celebrate as a new easy, fast and eco friendly transportation was finally finished and ready to try out. Many folks, including myself could not wait for this day, as we were all looking forward to get on the Metro for free (an offer like that doesn’t come very often).

Many citizens of Los Angeles complain about there being an exaggeration amount of traffic in Los Angeles’ freeways and streets. But what can you expect with a resident population in Los Angeles County of 9,862.049. There will obviously be alot of choas and flipping of the middle finger on trafficated freeways.

So here’s a a new way to reduce at least a small percentage of that….startby taking public transportation like the bus or metro. Statistics show that individuals who ride public transportation saved an additional $225 due to the 41 cent increase in gasoline. So there’s a plus to that matter, less pollution and less traffic.

My Guitar Life
Feb 22nd, 2009 by Flyboy

I believe playing guitar is a joyful and soothing hobby. My favorite guitar is a Fender Stratocaster. I have been playing for some time now, and it still is the talent of which I’m best at.

My favorite guitarist is Yngwie Malmsteen . Yngwie use to be in bands by the names of Alcatrazz and Rising Force. Yngwie’s playing style is very complex, and it takes very years to posess skills that which are melodic and fast. Yngwie makes me want to become a far gtreater then him.

I have been playing for about 2 years and I have not learned as much as I would have liked to. The day I picked up the instrument I felt a weird feeling of deja vu. I felt as I should wield the instrument with authority and no one can tell me otherwise. I wanted to play fast or slow it didn’t matter, I just wanted to play.

Furthermore playing guitar is a great hobby and I will always play guitar no matter what.

Bicycle thought
Aug 24th, 2008 by chatank

I’ve had little time to go out lately. The last time i went out i went to a friend’s house, but i want to do more than that. i want to go somewhere far, like another state or something.

i think it would be cool to go all the way to mexico and travel all down south to the border. The south of Mexico that is, and i would like to visit detroit and go underground and blow something up like in the batman movies.

last saturday i gave my bike a tune up, tightened all the ears greased the bearings (i don’t know how to spell that). Now my bike doesn’t make any weird stupid out of this world sounds and it’s cool because i can sneak up to someone with the bike. I really love riding my bike although maintaining the bike in good condition takes a lot of work. I’ve also been lookin for a job so that i can get the parts i need to upgrade the gears and make it more stable, so hopefully i’ll find job soon.
