a thousand splendid suns
May 27th, 2010 by vivi

either one

A thousand Splendid suns is about the people that live and survive their lives in third world countries during war time. They see many gruesome things that scars them and follows them until adulthood. In this book you realize about all the horrible suffering women go through in their daily lives. Over there it is so normal for women to be treated in such inhuman manners by their husbands and other men.

I really recommend this book because it opens your eyes to so may things that i never thought possible. It makes you really appreciate life as we know it and everything in this country that protects women’s rights.

Forever farewell?
May 23rd, 2010 by Julith

I grew up with one of my favorite cousins. She was older then me by 3 years. She and I would do everything together. She was like the oldest sister I would have asked for, and also my best friend.

Every time our family would get together i remember i would have this jolly face on me, because i would not see her as often as i would want too. She lived in south central and i lived here in Boyle heights. As time went by she started maturing and left her childhood. We would talk, but not as much like before.

Once she turned 18 she decided that college wasn’t really her thing. She knew that if she went to college that she would not have made it, so she decided to make a HUGE decision and join the Army. She believed that joining the Army would be easier for her to get her career straight and be more independent for herself. But as others believed she was risking her life in joining, a lot of our family tried to convince her against it, but she wouldn’t listen. She had her mind set already.

As for me i was really sad to hear that she was joining the army=, but the other part of me was really happy that she was making a right choice for herself. I look up to her and I really want to join the Army, but I’m scared  to go to war if i am chosen to go. My cousin and i don’t really see each other anymore. We hardly talk now that she’s in Colorado station.

Our family still gathers together but it’[s sad to see she’s not there to join us as before. Maybe she won’t be joining us for a while since she might be sent to Iraq in August. As time goes by i think about it and i wonder to myself, if she could change anything would she?

Bermuda Triangle
May 23rd, 2010 by jasmine10

The Bermuda Triangle is also known as the Devil’s Triangle, located in the Atlantic Ocean is a triangle shaped region that many people have said that a number of airplanes, ships, and boats have disappeared mysteriously and nobody has found out about them ever again.

The Mary Celeste was one out of many ships that was considered as one of the victims of the Bermuda Triangle. They said that the ship was found abandoned. No one ever found out the real reason about why the ship was found abandoned it makes no sense no anyone because they never had any evidence. They say that the ship was found with all of it’s belongings, nothing was found stolen, and the whether had been fine all those days. Then they found out that the ship had passed through Bermuda Triangle.

Many things that happen to go missing when they cross through the Bermuda Triangle, people don’t really believe that it was it or others just have other excuses and theories of why or what happened that day. Many other things have happened through the Bermuda Triangle. Some people are scared some others just don’t believe in it and think that what’s going to go wrong? So they just do it, but i haven’t known about anybody as brave as that. Maybe one day I will or WE will.

Metro Gold Line
Feb 2nd, 2010 by jessy56

Due to budget cuts, Mr. Gertner’s class was force to use the new Metro Gold line for their field trip to see “Palestine, New Mexico.”

It seems like a wacky idea at first, but at the end it became a great learning opportunity for the students of his class to learn about the transportation option in their neighborhood.

The Metro Gold line has been one of the most exiting project in the east side of town in recent years. Ever since it opened in November, it has given the opportunity for commuters to travel around Los Angeles in a different and faster way.

When entering the new Metro Gold line station, in Soto and 1st,  I noticed how nice and new everything looked. It look like it was still the grand opening.
You would think that a place like this would be fill with life but as it turns our it empty and lifeless, except for the officer who were their for security purpose.

Waiting on the Gold line didn’t take much time, in less than five minutes the train was here and ready to take us of to our destination.

Once aboard the train cart you can see and feel how nice and comfortable everything was. Riding the Metro to Union Station was a pleasant ride, looking out the window of the train you could see all the new improvements the Metro Gold line has brought to this once forgotten community.

Overall the Metro Gold line has brought new ways of commuting to other parts of Los Angels, and gives the opportunity for students like Mr. Gertner’s class to explore new stuff around their city.
FIL Guadalajara brings two cities together for a week
Nov 29th, 2009 by mrgertner

In a sign of the strengthening relationship between the artistic worlds of Los Angeles and Mexico this year’s 23rd annual International Book Fair of Guadalajara (FIL GDL), which runs from November 28 – December 6, includes a plethora of discussions, performances and art exhibits by Angelenos who have made the trip down to this city that has given us so much, including a large number of immigrants, a gazebo and a soccer team.

Opening the day after Thanksgiving with a visit from Mayor Villaraigosa, the FIL GDL promises to introduce Guadalajara to the rich cultural life of Los Angeles, with an understandable emphasis on Latino artists and authors. On top of the hundreds of publishers from all over the world, local publishing houses and authors will be representing in numbers, including Roosevelt favorite Luis Rodriguez, author of Always Running, and his Tia Chucha Press. Rodriguez is speaking on two panels and is also presenting an exhibit of two lowrider cars in the esplanade of the Expo Guadalajara, the main site of the festival. He plans on blogging throughout the week.

I am heading down to Guadalajara next weekend to check out the fair, after getting a really great deal on a package with Mexicana and Holiday Inn. I already used the FIL’s handy agenda planner to choose events to attend, including a panel discussion sponsored by Zocalo Public Square called “What makes an LA Writer?” with food critic Jonathan Gold and another presentation sponsored by UCLA called “Los Ángeles desde UCLA”.

Catalina Island
Apr 8th, 2009 by Roxy_17

cimg9943okay so just this weekend i went to Catalina Island for the first time..

I had a blast. it was definitely something to remember for the rest of my life. The first thing i noticed was the clear water. The vibe was also so different; it was peaceful.  We went rock climbing, snorkeling in the day and night, we had a campfire, and we went on a night hike. My personal fave. was the night hike. It was kinda scary getting up the mountain while it was so dark out but, we managed when we got up there, it was like the most perfect scene; the thousands of bright stars gleaming above me, and the sound of the ocean. So relaxing. That there was what made the whole trip worth while.

The Catalina Trip (CIMI) that happened last week was really great! Not only do you have fun, but you also learned a lot! It’s funny because we learn more there than we did in school.

The first day we got there, we met some of the greatest counselors ever! They are really great and nice! We went rock climbing and heard a story about the stars.

On Saturday, we went snorkeling. I was so scared! I am terrified of open water, but I still did it! We had shark labs and played jeopardy.  Oh yeah “Itty Bittys in you face!!” LOL. To bad for “your name”. After that we did a night snorkel! Pretty cool. We were that 1% of people that swim in the ocean at night. We got to see bioilluminescence.

On Sunday, we had one last snorkel before we left and it was really great! I recommend this trip to all those people in MESH. It is real great, we know for a fact that all those people that went to the last one are going again in March.

Bicycle thought
Aug 24th, 2008 by chatank

I’ve had little time to go out lately. The last time i went out i went to a friend’s house, but i want to do more than that. i want to go somewhere far, like another state or something.

i think it would be cool to go all the way to mexico and travel all down south to the border. The south of Mexico that is, and i would like to visit detroit and go underground and blow something up like in the batman movies.

last saturday i gave my bike a tune up, tightened all the ears greased the bearings (i don’t know how to spell that). Now my bike doesn’t make any weird stupid out of this world sounds and it’s cool because i can sneak up to someone with the bike. I really love riding my bike although maintaining the bike in good condition takes a lot of work. I’ve also been lookin for a job so that i can get the parts i need to upgrade the gears and make it more stable, so hopefully i’ll find job soon.
