Forever farewell?
May 23rd, 2010 by Julith

I grew up with one of my favorite cousins. She was older then me by 3 years. She and I would do everything together. She was like the oldest sister I would have asked for, and also my best friend.

Every time our family would get together i remember i would have this jolly face on me, because i would not see her as often as i would want too. She lived in south central and i lived here in Boyle heights. As time went by she started maturing and left her childhood. We would talk, but not as much like before.

Once she turned 18 she decided that college wasn’t really her thing. She knew that if she went to college that she would not have made it, so she decided to make a HUGE decision and join the Army. She believed that joining the Army would be easier for her to get her career straight and be more independent for herself. But as others believed she was risking her life in joining, a lot of our family tried to convince her against it, but she wouldn’t listen. She had her mind set already.

As for me i was really sad to hear that she was joining the army=, but the other part of me was really happy that she was making a right choice for herself. I look up to her and I really want to join the Army, but I’m scared  to go to war if i am chosen to go. My cousin and i don’t really see each other anymore. We hardly talk now that she’s in Colorado station.

Our family still gathers together but it’[s sad to see she’s not there to join us as before. Maybe she won’t be joining us for a while since she might be sent to Iraq in August. As time goes by i think about it and i wonder to myself, if she could change anything would she?

How I view Culture
May 4th, 2010 by evelyn44

The world is extremely diverse, there is so much to be apart of but what exactly makes individuals different and unique; culture. Before this assignment, I didn’t really think about belonging to a certain culture, or realized the way in which we live life. Sometimes I feel that I have no say in what my culture has become to be it just happened. It’s the way my parents have taught me to be, a lifestyle that I have become accustomed to.  Regardless of this I have to admit that the culture I’m part of is very interesting and full of surprises. I see my culture more of a mixture of background, tradition, and values.  I believe these are the3 most important aspects of my culture.  My parents have come from different parts of the world; therefore my culture isn’t as strict as others.  My family does relate more to the Mexican Culture rather than the Central American culture.  Our traditions include Easter, , Christmas, and Thanksgiving and many other Catholic traditions.  We are used to the art, music, food, and religion of these parts of the world.  If I were to leave I would truly miss all of this since I’m used to it but that doesn’t mean I’m not up to trying new things.

So as I’m talking about the culture, I think I have described my family’s culture rather than my own identity of my own culture. Sometimes I really ask myself, “DO we really have to identity ourselves to a certain type of culture? Isn’t this just another label? I tend to think that culture is another excuse to label certain groups. It is a label that identifies a person and makes a group look alike, what ever happened to being unique and just enjoying anything without being judged or classified to a certain category.

An A-List Novel
Apr 28th, 2010 by Julith

Have you Ever thought about how your life would be like if you were  in the ” A-list” ( Meaning Rich and Famous) ?

i started reading this book called “The A list” by Zoey Dean About how this Girl named Anna Percy Moves from New york to Los Angeles to move with her dad, because she believes that she needs to start a new life and meet her father.

On the plane to Los Angeles she met Ben. Ben and Anna hook up. He invites her to one of his good friends father’s wedding (Jackson Sharpes).

What Anna doesn’t know is that she’s about to meet “The Mean Girls”. Sam Sharpe, Cammie and Dee, the ones that made her night impossible and ruin her dress, and to top it off embarrassed her in front of the coward.

Anna tries to play it off and stay cool, whatever they said or do was avoid. Cammie had a thing with Ben before Anna so Cammie’s plan is to make Anna’s life impossible as long as she’s seeing Ben.

One night Ben and Anna escape the night and go to one of Ben’s father’s yachts and just hang out there, and before you know it Anna falls asleep and Ben is gone. He left her alone on a beach she barely even knows.

She doesn’t talk to Ben after he tries to contact her. Sam invites Anna to a community service for her school. Anna relaizes that Sam isn’t such a bad person just when you push her limits of course.

Next thing you know Anna attends Beverly Hills High, along with Sam, Cammie, and Dee. Anna’s first day at Beverly High was awful, but who shows up? Ben. He explains to Anna what had happened and why he left without telling her. Anna listens and she carefully tells him that she doesn’t care and she doesn’t want to see him anymore.

Fascist Nazi forces from the misnamed “National Socialist Movement” are coming to LA. These racists have been organizing rallies in Southern California to attack and harass immigrants. But each time, they have been driven away by huge counter-???protests.???

Nazi racism targets not only Latino immigrants, but also the Black community, Asians, Arabs, Native peoples, Jews, LGBT people, leftists and anyone who opposes their hate. Now, the Nazis are attempting to rally in downtown LA at City Hall. We must be there with thousands to say NO to racism!

The ANSWER Coalition is calling on all anti-racist people to stand united against the Nazis and drive them out of Los Angeles. Help us build this action. Together, we can stop racist hate! Down with Nazis/KKK!

L.A River buffed

Throughout the years the L.A river has been home to many graffiti artist but as of last year it has been reposed by the government and they have erased all the rich history of true L.A art. Definitely one of the saddest days ever.

Cypress Hill
Apr 8th, 2010 by Adrian

Cypress Hill is an American hip hop group from South Gate, California. Originally called DVX, the name was changed after Mellow Man Ace left in 1988. Cypress Hill was the first Latino group to have platinum and multi-platinum albums, selling over 18 million albums worldwide. They are one of the most well known groups in West Coast rap and are critically acclaimed for their first two albums.

One of the band’s most striking aspects is B-Real’s exaggeratedly high-pitched nasal vocals. In the book Check the Technique B-Real describes his nasal style, saying his rapping voice is “high and annoying… the nasal style I have was just something that I developed… my more natural style wasn’t so pleasing to ears” and talking about the nasal style in the book How to Rap, B-Real says, “you want to stand out from the others and just be distinct… when you got something that can separate you from everybody else, you gotta use it to your advantage”. Sen Dog’s vocals are deeper and are a contrast to B-Real’s, who says, “Sen’s voice is so strong”, “but it all blends together” when they are both on the same track.

Both B-Real and Sen Dog started writing lyrics in both Spanish and English and B-Real was inspired to start writing raps from watching Sen Dog and Mellow Man Ace writing their lyrics, and originally B-Real was going to just be the writer for the group rather than a rapper. Their lyrics are noted for bringing a “cartoonish” approach to violence by Peter Shapiro and Allmusic

Sen Dog’s lyrics are progressively more violent and tend to involve fewer rhyme schemes compared with B-Real’s. In addition words are emphasized by adding a background voice to say them; however, Sen Dog’s emphases are always more prominent, mostly shouted alongside with the rapping.

The sound and groove of their music, produced by Muggs, is also notable for its influence and stoned aesthetic; with its bass-heavy rhythms and odd sample loops “Insane in the Brain” is notable for having a pitched-altered horse neigh looped in its chorus, it carries a psychedelic Skinza value, which lessened in the later albums.

The band is also known for involving rock instruments in their songs – this has caused the band to sometimes be classified as a Rap rock group. In IV, there is Lightning Strikes which doesn’t truly use electric guitars, but a synthesized version of it. Skull & Bones has an entire disc using such instruments, labeled Bones. As for their later works, their involvement in rock ended with the albumStoned Raiders.

The band’s music is constantly subject to change; while the first album follows a more minimalistic and funky sound, Black Sunday, the successor, has a slightly darker side to it. III (Temples of Boom)and IV are mostly influenced by psychedelic music. The band abandoned that on Skull & Bones and got closer to the modern rap as it is today.

The band involves horns in their songs, and often have guitar and horns together in the instrumentals. What’s Your Number?TroubleTequila Sunrise, and Superstar have become some of the bands most popular songs featuring these elements.

March for justice!
Mar 26th, 2010 by SupahKillahSm00thie

We are in the thick of march madness, and I’m not talking NCAA Basketball. On the heels of the mass demonstration in Washington, DC last Sunday, and marches throughout California this week, Los Angelinos will be out in full force tomorrow.

Congress continues to place the immigration reform bill on the back burner. The last immigration reform bill was passed in 1986 under President Ronald Reagan’s administration.

It’s not right that we don’t focus on the immigration reform bill on the basis that it’s not “practical”. If I may recall, attempting to pass a health care bill wasn’t practical either, however, Congress has made it evident that they have priorities.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa who met with Congress, asked for money to invest in public transportation. As opposed to demand an immigration reform bill for the people of his community, he doesn’t. It’s time that America stops playing politics and starts focusing on what’s right, as opposed to what’s popular.

With the above stated, we, as the youth must show our support. And ultimately, pressure Congress to pass a fair immigration reform bill in 2010.  This Saturday, people will be marching to show support. It’s important that people attend! Tell your friends and families to go. SHOW SUPPORT!

Spring Break for Everyone
Mar 26th, 2010 by jasmine10

Everyone is always so anxious for a little vacation. Spring Break is a perfect time to get away from all those different things that are happening in life.

You could be with friends, with family, or just by yourself. It doesn’t really matter as long as you get the time to forget and have fun. Some people throughout the Spring Break will go to the beach, on a get away trip, hangout with friends, or by themselves.

Spring Break is the week when everyone gets crazy and excited. People start making plans like the week before so that way when the day comes there on and going and know already what they are going to do.

So if you’re planning on doing something crazy and over the top, be careful and stay on the safe side. (;
