How I view Culture
May 4th, 2010 by evelyn44

The world is extremely diverse, there is so much to be apart of but what exactly makes individuals different and unique; culture. Before this assignment, I didn’t really think about belonging to a certain culture, or realized the way in which we live life. Sometimes I feel that I have no say in what my culture has become to be it just happened. It’s the way my parents have taught me to be, a lifestyle that I have become accustomed to.  Regardless of this I have to admit that the culture I’m part of is very interesting and full of surprises. I see my culture more of a mixture of background, tradition, and values.  I believe these are the3 most important aspects of my culture.  My parents have come from different parts of the world; therefore my culture isn’t as strict as others.  My family does relate more to the Mexican Culture rather than the Central American culture.  Our traditions include Easter, , Christmas, and Thanksgiving and many other Catholic traditions.  We are used to the art, music, food, and religion of these parts of the world.  If I were to leave I would truly miss all of this since I’m used to it but that doesn’t mean I’m not up to trying new things.

So as I’m talking about the culture, I think I have described my family’s culture rather than my own identity of my own culture. Sometimes I really ask myself, “DO we really have to identity ourselves to a certain type of culture? Isn’t this just another label? I tend to think that culture is another excuse to label certain groups. It is a label that identifies a person and makes a group look alike, what ever happened to being unique and just enjoying anything without being judged or classified to a certain category.

Teen Drinking gets out of hand.
Apr 19th, 2010 by evelyn44

As teenagers grow into full grown adults, there seems so be an issue that is increasing at an alarming rate and that happens to be the excess consumption of alcohol. Many teenagers tend to do it because they want to have a “good time”,” forget about problems”, to “party- hardy” or basically just to “go with the flow”

Teenagers don’t really think of the long term effects that it can have on them. All some think about is just having a very good time. I insist that teenagers/high school students have to realize that they can have a good time at a party without drinking. Some questions that can come to mind before drinking and having second thoughts about it can be:

“Do I really need to be buzzed/drunk to have a good time? Does this mean that I’m not fun being sober?

Can this be an issue I may have?

All I’m saying is that, if you find yourself drinking, or drinking too much you have to realize what effects that may have upon you. Think of the future, don’t mess up your present & you’re future. Bad things can happen when drunk that you may regret.

And if you don’t know if alcohol is getting out of hand you can ask yourself these other questions!

  1. Do you sometimes drink more than you mean to?
  2. Have you tried to cut back on your drinking and failed?
  3. Do you black-out (have trouble remembering things that happened) while drinking?
  4. Have your problems at school, work or with your relationships gotten worse since you started drinking?
  5. Do you keep drinking even though you know it’s causing problems?
  6. Do you drink when you feel stressed?
  7. Do you drink alone?
  8. Can you drink much more now than you used to be able to?
  9. Do you ever feel uncomfortable when you haven’t had a drink?
  10. Do you drink even when it’s important to stay sober?
Abusive relationships in the lives of women and teens
Apr 9th, 2010 by evelyn44

As we grow up, new relationships occur on a daily basis.  Many people assume that  all relationships are nice and “out of love or lust.”  But how many people have actually sat down and thought about abusive relationships that some couples have?  In fact, I can probably guess that not many people want to hear about them, or even actually realize that they may be in an abusive relationship.

I read a book called “Dreamland” by Sarah Dessen and I absolutely loved it. This book is about a young girl named Caitlin who suffers from the abandonment of her sister and looks for comfort to Rogerson.  Since the beginning of their relationship  it wasn’t as great but just being with him, made her clear her mind of all current problems .  As days pass her boy friend Rogerson starts to be controlling and hits her out of anger. She doesn’t know how to deal with it, and even starts to blame things on herself.  She puts up with him because she “loves him.”

“he screamed, and then pushed me away from him, hard, so that I fell back against the door again and this time it swung open fully, making a loud, scraping noise against the sidewalk .”Rogerson” I said as I-struggled to my feet, “please- ” “get up!” he yelled and grabbed me by the arm yanking me toward him.”(215)

Towards the end of the book, Caitlin does receive help because her boyfriend sends her to the hospital, but not only does this happen I books but in real life, more than you can imagine it’s just  hard to tell.

Some clues that can help you notice abusive relationships can be:

  • Is jealous or possessive toward you.
  • Tries to control you by being very bossy or demanding.
  • Tries to isolate you by demanding you cut off social contacts and friendships.
  • Is violent and / or loses his or her temper quickly.
  • Blames you when he or she mistreats you.

The list goes on check here if you’re interested.

If a person you know or yourself can relate to this leave before it’s too late.

Are you afraid of Sharks
Apr 5th, 2010 by evelyn44

This past weekend I went on a trip with my marine biology class (Mr. Ozuna) to Catalina Island along with several other students.  The trip itself was so educational, and very informative.  Out of all the things that I learned one thing struck me the most dealing with sharks.  They mentioned that ever since the movie Jaws came out it caused a big influence worldwide.  The author Peter Benchley first had published a book called Jaws then decided to go Widescreen and it was a big hit.  But because of the movie a lot of people started having doubts about going in the water if it’s really safe? Unfortunately I can say that this movie really traumatized me, ever since I saw Jaws, my mind has forever since then banned sharks.

I have like the scariest view of them I truly see them as monsters. Every time I set my foot upon the ocean I am afraid that a shark might come to the shore and devour me.

The Catalina Island staff clearly stated that sharks don’t even attack humans because of their intentions to feed, but because maybe they might be threatened or they are confused or curious. Humans don’t don’t provide enough high-fat meat for sharks, which need a lot of energy to power their large, muscular bodies.

You might be surprised that worldwide the number of sharks that attack humans is rather low than the number of sharks that are killed by humans. Even lightning strikes kill more people than sharks.

Eating Junk Food
Mar 26th, 2010 by evelyn44

Everywhere we go, one item is always following us, or either we are bringing it with us that is JUNK FOOD. Eating a little bit of junk food here and there doesn’t harm you, but what if it becomes a habit? To eat chips, soda, and candy everyday? Should a person become concerned a bout their health. For example, some people (especially teenagers), tend to brake out when eating too much junk food. Others gain weight at an impressively alarming rate not noticing what to blame their weight on. Others also might just have problems throughout their day when it hits you in the long run, maybe you don’t run as fast because your diet, and the way your body is functioning undergoes a lot of junk food.

What is junk food?
Lollypops, soft drink, potato chips, hot chips, ice cream, and hamburgers, hot dogs and other kinds of take away food are called junk food

What’s wrong with junk food?

Too much fat! Junk foods such as hamburgers, pizza, fried chicken and chips usually contain loads of saturated fats. Too much saturated fat in the diet will cause people to put on weight and get fat or obese (very fat). Being overweight is a risk to the health of the heart and can cause other diseases.

Too much salt! Junk foods often have too much salt. There’s a lot of salt already in foods such as bread, breakfast cereals and biscuits and cakes. So people are getting more salt than they need when they eat junk food. Too much salt is unhealthy for the heart.

Remember try to avoid junk food as much as you can!

Susie watches from the heavens
Mar 4th, 2010 by evelyn44

I’m sure many of you have heard about the movie called “Lovely Bones.”  Before watching the movie, to be honest I thought it was going to be boring. Once I watched it I was real in tune with it. I was hooked on the movie. I was also scared a bit because it does deal with solving a murder. The movie itself is pretty self explanatory easy to understand but the book gets even better. I actually wanted to read the book, not only because

I have to reach my AR points but because I believed I would have more juicy details and I did. I like the way the writer writes the book, and the writer is so descriptive.

The Story overall revolves around young girl named Susie. The book opens up with talking about the way she got murdered. Which is very descriptive and intense.  She describes how she took a shortcut from school to her house and she gets approached by her neighbor who’s name is George Harvey.  He persuades her to enter this underground den he recently built. And all the intention to get Susie.

Susie of course falls for the trick and shes stuck underneath with George Harvey.I love how the book describes this part because the movie just shows how she goes underneath and then she escapes her body and gios to the heavens.  In the book,Susie describes what she feels when George’s body weight is all up on her, and rapes her. The book goes into depth into this part which makes the book a lot more interesting. After he rapes her, he murders her by stabbing her to death and then puts her body in pieces.

The book then talks about how the whole family is at grief due to such a big loss. How everyone gets affected and how they cope with it.  A lot of interesting things happen but I don’t want to mess it up for you just in case you read it.

I really recommend it so pick it up at the RHS Library they have it, and it gives you 16 points :)

LA seeks unlicensed dogs
Feb 28th, 2010 by evelyn44

The City of Los Angeles, didn’t even know where to find money from, or who to take money from until last Tuesday.  According to the Los Angeles Times, there are 4 million people in the city of Los Angeles and who knows how many dogs there are? They mention that dogs don’t pay, about 120,000 are licensed and many are not.

Dogs don’t make money. But the City Council is betting that going after their owners for license fees will help fill L.A.’s cash-starved coffers.

A license for a sterilized dog costs $15. An owner with an unaltered dog has to pay $100 — plus possibly $120 more for the breeder’s license technically required for unaltered dogs. (There are exemptions for some canines, including service dogs.)

If, as council President Eric Garcetti contends, roughly two-thirds of the city’s dogs are not licensed, that could mean at least an additional $3.6 million in fees even if all those scofflaw dog owners paid only the lowest license fee.

On Tuesday, the council unanimously approved a motion to have the Department of Animal Services coordinate with the Department of Water and Power, which keeps a handy database from its meter readers of residences with dogs.

The task of locating unlicensed dogs falls to eight full-time canvassers for the Department of Animal Services, who roam the city looking for canines with no licenses or expired licenses and handing out information on spaying and neutering.

Overall I think this is very unfair! Taking it out on families with pets.

What did they ever do, they act like dogs don’t cost anything, what about food? Toys? Shampoo? Tick & flee Medicine, Vets bill?

Everyone’s having a hard time already as it is, and to add another bill to the table is just unfair. Yeah, to some money comes easily but to others it doesn’t.

I got really angry once I heard about all this. Can’t they tax cigarette buyers or something else? They are just going to refuse to have pets and more dogs are going to end up in the pound.  Overpopulated dog pounds are next, and to then they’re going to get to the extent of putting them to sleep. Not a pretty scenario.

What is Los Angeles turning into? Are we going to tax every new-born now?

Anger in your life
Feb 19th, 2010 by evelyn44

Anger, Anger, Anger. There might not be one person in this world who doesn’t get mad. Qetting angry is a normal part of life. It is a natural emotion but it can sometimes lead to a scenario or phase that is out of control. I was told that keeping anger in check is actually healthy for ones self, one might get sick less often or one feels better emotionally.

Since getting angry is a normal part of life letting it get the best of you is not!

So how exactly can we know as teenager or adults when anger is getting the best of us and out of control and what can we do about it?

Your anger is out of control if…

  • you find yourself getting angry at everything that inconveniences you, annoys you or otherwise gets in the way of what you want to be doing,
  • it leads you to act out aggressively or violently as in yelling, ranting, hitting, shoving or plotting revenge,
  • it consumes you long after the event has passed, if you dwell on the things that make you angry then you’re in trouble because normal anger is only a temporary emotional response to unsettling eternal stimuli,
  • things that didn’t used to make you angry are suddenly major issues worthy of a rant, this does not apply to times when you have suppressed normal anger only to times that anger really isn’t merited, for example when somebody gets a higher grade than you or when a person is taking too long in the bathroom,
  • you find yourself doing self destructive things to cope with your angry feelings, such as reckless driving, hazardous recreational activities, physical fighting, drugs and alcohol or, unsafe or random sexual activity.

(Source: http://teenadvice.about.com/od/violencebullying/a/angermanagement.htm)

Here are some easy tips and guidelines that may help you control anger…

  • Recognizing the difference between an annoyance or inconvenience and a bona fide reason to get mad – somebody hurting you, hurting somebody you care for or damaging your property are all good reasons to get mad; somebody “disrespecting” you, getting in your way, slowing you down, being luckier than you, or doing something better than you do it are not reasonable causes of anger,
  • taking a deep breath, stepping away from the situation and asking yourself “Why am I really mad?”, often people misdirect anger caused by a valid yet bigger issue on to everyday annoyances and inconveniences,
  • know your triggers, if there are certain things that you know bother you or that you can’t accept know what they are, take steps to avoid them, and play out an appropriate reaction in your head when you’re feeling calm to train your mind to react that way when the problem arises in real life,
  • plan your time wisely, one of the most common anger stressors is poor time management, when you’re in a rush and something slows you down even more you are very likely to react in anger, the simplest way to avoid this is to exercise effective time management,
  • exercising regularly, it’s true that exercise is an excellent way to de-stress body and mind, people who exercise regularly are less likely to overreact to annoyances and inconveniences,
  • talk it out, reacting in anger often causes the reasoning center of the brain to shut off for a time and the way you can turn it back on is to talk rather than act out when anger takes hold, it may sound crazy but taking a few minutes to gather your thoughts and speaking them out loud can do wonders to diffuse an angry situation.

Anger can also be something good to have once in a while, anger can help you figure out that something is bothering you enabling you to fix that certain issue.

Water Polo and RHS Water Polo
Feb 12th, 2010 by evelyn44

The sport Water Polo hasn’t really gotten much recognition to what they really deserve. In Roosevelt Water Polo isn’t one of the most well-known sports in which bleachers are full with student’s excited for the new games.

Before I had the responsibility to cover the water polo game, I really didn’t pay much attention  to it. I think it was mostly because I didn’t have a clue about what water polo was really all about.

As I started to witness the tension of this game, I realized that it’s actually really interesting. Water polo is a game that has a combination of the best aspects of Basketball, soccer, and Hockey.

There are 6 Field players and one goalie. The winner of the game is obviously the one who scores more goals. Sounds easy but the girls tend to get aggressive and rough really making the sport interesting, it gets even more complicated when the players are only allowed to pass a bright yellow soccer like ball.

Watching the RHS girls play was really fun. On February the 3rd They played against Huntington Park and the game was really intense and so aggressive. Both teams are really good, several team players got a bit hurt, by the level of aggressiveness and roughness. Sometimes the girls have to play “ghetto water polo” often referred to by water polo team member Claudia, a sophomore.  Losing by one, the girls played an amazing game and played El Camino Real this past Wednesday, winning 8-4
