Dear CNMT Community,
I feel grateful to be working with such a dedicated group of teachers. On Friday afternoon I left an overview of the Transcript Evaluation Service and headed down to the Main Office to have Teri show me how to make a purchase with our new P-card, which is basically a credit card for CNMT.
While in the office, I saw Ms. De Las Cuevas, who told me about the Padres como Autores workshop that she and Ms. Hayes had hosted the day before. Not many parents came, but they are sticking with it and hoping to attract more interest. Hopefully the $1,000 we were just awared by PLAS to support the program can help with this.
After leaving the office I chatted with Ines, Lew, Teresa and Margie outside the ISIS office. Did I mention that I also feel incredibly grateful to have such capable, hard-working support staff?
Soon I found myself in R204 with The Dreamers, a new club for undocumented students that Ms. Perez is sponsoring. They are selling raffle tickets for scholarships and club activities. I myself tried to start a similar club, but it never got off the ground, so I am thrilled that Ms. Perez has stepped up and has gained some momentum, with the support of SHOUT.
Most days Ms. Perez, one of our new math teachers, can be found afterschool in R108, assisting students with their math, staying every day, along with Ms. Bizarro, knowing that they are not being compensated. Mr. Dean also stays every day to voluntarily tutor students, often until 6:00pm or later. On Friday he was showing “Malcolm X” to his AP Language students, staying until 6pm. He was also planning of giving them a practice test on Saturday.
Finally, I made my way over to Mr. Lopez’s room, where the Art Club was listening to a guest artist, Ernesto Yarena. When he was done, Ernesto, a remarkable young talent who works closely with Shepard Fairy, took out a collection of stencils he had made, and we went to work spraypainting designs on backpacks, paper, stickers and anything else that looked like it could use some decorating. I made a little poster for my wife and a new sticker for my laptop. I had a lot of fun. Ms. Berteau and Ms. Dueñas also stayed to join in, but Mr. Baird was helping students in his room, so he couldn’t make it over.
These are just some of the many examples of CNMT teachers going above and beyond to bring what Jeff Duncan-Andrade calls Critical Hope to students. In this case, teachers are providing Material Hope, connecting schooling to the real, material conditions of urban life.
I did not mention all the hard-working teachers of CNMT because I did not run into them all on Friday afternoon, but I know there are many. Mr. Vince Cruz stays after hours working with students in chemistry. Mr. Ohn-Bar brings students to UCLA to participate in the Math Circle. Mr. Casas has created a leadership club that already has great plans to build a stronger school culture and support network for CNMT students. Ms. Berteau has kept the poetry slam going through good times and bad. Mr. Parral is bringing in both major candidates for the CD14 race to give students opportunities to intern. Ms. Melshenker is working with stduents to enter Lucile Roybal-Allard’s Congressional art competition. And the list goes on…
When someone says that the key to school improvement is getting rid of the bad teachers, I have a hard time accepting that. We don’t hear enough that so many teachers are giving so much of themselves, never expecting compensation or any recognition. But they should be compensated and they should be recognized. When CNMT sees dramatic improvement in student achievement, it will be because of the great faculty and staff that we have.
Have a great week,
