CNMT Weekly Update – 1/30/12

Dear CNMT Community,

We will be starting our extended day CAHSEE prep program this week on Wednesday. Classes will run from 3:15 – 5:15 on Wednesday and Thursday for four week, and then will add Mondays on the last two weeks before the test, with the last class falling on Monday, March 12, the day before the March CAHSEE census.

All 10th graders are encouraged to enroll, as well as any 11th & 12th graders who will be taking the CAHSEE for the first time or need to pass one or both sections. We are fortunate to have funding from Beyond the Bell to support this program, combined with the free access to the Revolution Prep program that the Partnership has provided.

Last year we only had an overall passing rate of 44% for first-time test-takers. The area that we struggled the most with was English. I really want to encourage all students to do whatever they can to prepare for this year’s test, because we want you to put this hurtle behind you so you can focus on your classes and preparation for college. CNMT Weekly Update – 1/23/12

Dear CNMT Community,

First of all, congratulations to CNMT students Diana Ochoa, Perla Gutierrez, Oscar Rodriguez, Beatris Sosa, and Jorge Estrada, along with CNMT teacher Mr. Baird, whose trip to Harvard last Spring was recently featured in a compelling series of videos on YouTube that were highlighted by Colorlines as Hometown Loving Boyle Heights Youth Head to Harvard.

This week is all about community and giving a good push toward the end of the semester.

In the area of community, I’d like to highlight a few events this week. First, we are having our Shopping Night at the Fresh and Easy on Central and Adams, just south of Downtown. We get 5% of all proceeds for that time, and CNMT teachers will be volunteering to help people bag and to collect receipts. Last year we made over $300 for our school from this event.

This week, Starbucks will start giving out $10 vouchers for DonorsChoose at select locations. Customers can then login and choose projects to fund. Hopefully we will have a bunch more projects on the CNMT page, which unfortunately is listed at CMNT. We have 5 projects up now, waiting to be funded. Thanks to the teachers (VC, Parral, Baird, Mendez & Casas) for taking the time to write these proposals. I know more teachers are working on proposals, so hopefully we’ll see more up there soon. The odds are really good to get funded!

We will also be having two events for parents to choose projects to fund. The first will be the last week of January and the second during the second week of February. Details to come. Continue reading

CNMT Weekly Update – 1/17/12

Dear CNMT Community,

I first of all want to thank all the teachers who attended Friday’s period-by-period training. As you know, all of Roosevelt will begin using the online Office Discipline Referral system tomorrow in place of paper referrals. We had a great turnout at the training, and I think Michael Massa from Support Unit East did a great job of keeping it concise and informative.

I am pasting in the memo from Mr. Montes that was distributed last week on Friday. I want to make sure that everyone was able to read about the new policies going into effect this week. Continue reading

CNMT Weekly Update – 1/9/12

Dear CNMT Community,

Happy New Year to everyone. I hope you are all feeling well rested and ready to go back to work/school. I spent lots of quality time with my new daughter, and definitely feel very fortunate to have had such an opportunity.

It may take a couple of days to get back into the swing of things, but we will need to hit the ground running.

As you know, the CAHSEE census is coming up in mid-March, so we only have 8 weeks to prepare. This week we are starting to use Revolution Prep during flex classes. Teachers, please look at the laptop cart schedule for your day. It’s on Inside CNMT and posted in the collaboration room. Continue reading
