CNMT Weekly Update – 6/3/13
Dear CNMT Community,
The school year is winding up and so is our three year experience as a small school. I am so excited for our graduates! On Friday I had the privilege of joining Ms. Bizarro’s senior advisory for a circle. We were being visited by Michelle King, Cheri Thomas and Zsuzsanna Vincze from LAUSD School Operations. They are interested in learning more about how restorative justice can be part of a proactive, positive approach to school discipline that supports students instead of pushing them out through suspension, especially now that the School Board has banned suspension for willful defiance.
Ms. Bizarro’s advisory is an amazing group of resilient Rough Riders who exemplify the RIDERS traits. They all ended their freshman year unable to promote to 10th grade status because of failing classes. Some continued to fall behind, and some caught up earlier. Many of them started their senior year still far behind in credits. According to a Chicago study, students who were off track after freshman year had a 22% chance of graduating in four years. Through the support of Ms. Bizarro, each other, and also the use of RJ circles this year, as well as access to credit recovery through APEX, adult school, and off-site programs, this class of 14 students in this class of 18 will be graduating on stage on Wednesday, which is 78%. Remarkable! Continue reading
East Side Stories: A Grassroots Vision for Education & Community
This was a highlight from last year, and I expect this year’s to be just as amazing. Seeing students empowered and excited about being part of the school community and positive change was truly inspiring. Come get inspired yourself!
Students from across the Los Angeles area will teach community members about a range of social justice issues at a June 1 conference that positions youth voice at the forefront of social change efforts.
Organized by a group of Roosevelt High School educators and students, the conference—East Side Stories: A Grassroots Vision for Education & Community—seeks to foster youth empowerment and community organizing. The conference will be held from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at Roosevelt High School, 456 South Mathews Street, Los Angeles. Admission is free.

Dear CNMT Community,
This week I would like to discuss why we need to beat Garfield. For the pride of our students and the community of Boyle Heights, we must look at every single way we can do better than our rival.
Since the founding of the two schools back in the 1920s, Roosevelt and Garfield have been rivals. The East LA Classic is the most famous example, but we are rivals in everything, even though we are one family when it comes down to it.
It’s about bragging rights in everything we do: football, volleyball, basketball, CST results, college acceptances, graduation rates, CAHSEE pass rates, famous alumni, everything! Continue reading

CNMT Weekly Update – 5/20/13
Dear CNMT Community,
In the 11 years I have been at Roosevelt, I have seen many changes in structure and leadership. Students have come in as Freshmen, made their mark and moved on to bigger and better things. Teachers have come and gone too, but the core of our faculty has been at Roosevelt for a number of years. We have endured budget cuts and reduced enrollment, and now it is rare to have a teacher whose been with us for fewer than seven years.

A future Rough Rider celebrated an early Mother’s Day with her mom on Saturday at the CNMT LTEL parent workshop.
Dear CNMT Community,
This weekend CNMT celebrated Mother’s Day with a workshop targeted to parents of Long Term English Learners. Organized by Dr. Ibarra, Jantre, Nelson and our TAs Michelle and Lydia, the workshop focused on reclassification to Fluent English Proficient.
To start us out, Ms. Alva delivered a recorded message that she created on her laptop in which she gave parents some ideas about how they can support their child in learning English and improving their reading and writing skills. Parents commented that they found the presentation to be very helpful. A nice touch with that Ms. Alva shared information about her own daughter’s scores and how she was able to improve her own achievement on the CST and go to college.
